Dive into the Ocean Earth Day Celebrations - 2015

Posted on April 17th, 2015

Next Wednesday (April 22) marks the 45th annivsary of Earth Day. Here at Dive into the Ocean, we have decided to dedicate the whole week to celebrations. How are we celebrating? By hanging out with students, of course!

Dr. Leslie will head up to Arlington, VA for a packed week of shows and hands on activities with local schools, reaching more than 250 students. "I love visiting schools during the week of Earth Day," comments Dr. Leslie. "Students are so pumped about saving our planet and schools always have so many wonderful activities planned. I am just so honored to be a part of their festivities year after year."

In addition to the shows, Dive into the Ocean is celebrating the Earth Day week by sharing two of our newest projects that will extend Dive into the Ocean's reach beyond Dr. Leslie's classroom visits: Dive into the Ocean Interactive! and Dive into the Ocean Science Tool Kits to allow students to continue their ocean exploration in and out of the classroom.

Dive into the Ocean Interactive!

We've teamed up with the award-winning Scripps Institution of Oceanography Games to bring students a web-based interactive adventure! Students will pilot their own submarine from the sea surface to the deep ocean exploring physical, chemical, biological, and geological features of the ocean along the way. Using a novel multi-dimensional web tool, Parallax Scrolling, and embedded video games, this website will make for a fully immersive ocean exploration experience.

Dive into the Ocean Science Tool Kit

The fun of ocean science does not need to end when Dr. Leslie leaves the classroom. Our goal of the Ocean Science Tool Kit project is to provide each class Dr. Leslie visits with an Ocean Science Tool Kit so they can continue their ocean exploration in and out of the classroom. Students will be able to perform real science experiments by testing water properties like temperature, nutrients, oxygen, and salinity!

In order for each of these projects to happen, we need your help! Celebrate Earth Day week with us, by helping making these projects a reality through your donations; breaking down the barriers of who has access to the ocean sciences.

Your tax-deductible donation will go directly toward these new project; feel free to indicate what you would like your donation to go toward – Interactive!, Tool Kit, or DIO General Fund. You can also get a head start sponsoring a school for the next school year.

"I am beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to participate in the Smithsonian's World Ocean Day festivities," remarks Dr. Leslie. "The National Museum of Natural History has been my favorite museum since I was a small child growing up in Northern VA and I can't wait to share that excitement with the next generation."

THE 2015 SEASON of Dive into the Ocean started with a bang as Dr. Leslie visited Daniels Run Elementary School in Fairfax, VA. Over the course of two days she met with the entire 5th grade and performed small group shows with interactive hands-on activities. "We are so excited to have Dr. Leslie back after 5 years in a row," said Lori Huberman Hayes, Science Technology Resource Teacher at Daniels Run. "The Dive into the Ocean program is thought-provoking to students and staff and comprises so many of the VA Science Standards of learning. Dr. Leslie is enthusiastic and has amazing rapport with our students. We look forward to having her visit our school next year."

Not only is this year DIO's fifth year offering its programs, but marks its first year offering them as a 501(c)(3) non-profit.
